He analyzes texts by Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, Dorothy Sayers and Mickey Spillane, among others, to demonstrate that the detective's truth-generating function is crucial to the institutional and class-based interests that he or she serves.
