This study sheds light on the critical aspects of financial networks of the Muslim Brotherhood and its visible and invisible economy. The study analyzes the group's approach to economic issues and documents what its leaders have written. It also reviews the literature on the group's suspicious activities and its complex, intertwined regional and international relations with financial and business centers and circles of influence worldwide. It may be strange to study the funding sources of a group that calls for Islam da'wah, or invitation, as people engaged in such activities are supposed to be ascetic and leading an austere life. However, the Muslim Brotherhood is far from this. It first emerged as a Da'wah group and then transformed into a political and economic entity in terms of its goals and aspirations. Accordingly, its identity has become based on religious texts, political pragmatism, and economic interests. As a result of the intertwined relations between these aspects throughout its history, the power of money and financiers within the group dominated all dimensions of Da'wah activity, theorization, and political agenda. The domination of the group's businessmen over its institutions and decision-making has led one of its leading members, Abdel Sattar el-Meligy, to complain that the "e;group is being led by bankers and financiers instead of religious scholars and preachers."e; How has the group managed its financial networks? What factors have helped it develop its resources? What is the nature and dimensions of its economic vision? What are the areas of the group's investments abroad? Has the group succeeded in achieving financial independence? What is the role of economics in the group's management of its battles with the ruling regime in Egypt? In the seven chapters of this study, we have tried to answer these questions and looked into the group's financial networks and sources. The book also investigates the link between its financiers and the rampant corruption among its leaders, and the role of ideology and politics in strengthening its funding networks. The rising international concern about its economic expansion, and the possible fate of the group's economic might due to restrictions it has been subjected to since June 30, 2013, in Egypt or worldwide, are also probed in the book.
