This special issue of SAMPJ gives focus to the transformative role that higher education must play in addressing the social, cultural, economic and environmental challenges facing the world over the coming decades and, in particular, how this agenda can be effectively enacted and supported. Numerous policy announcements have been made calling for higher education action on the area over the past decade and an increasing number of publications are appearing on what might be done to build a focus on the four pillars of sustainability into the curriculum, research, engagement activities and operations of universities. However, there has been much less attention given to establishing how to ensure these desired developments are successfully implemented and sustained and it is to this latter issue that this special issue gives focus. The key themes explored in this issue are, therefore: - Good ideas with no ideas on how to implement them are wasted ideas- Change doesn't just happen but must be led-It is not only a matter of where to go but also how to get there.
