Joseph T. Stanik, a retired U.S. Navy officer, is the author of "Swift and Effective Retribution:" The U.S. Sixth Fleet and the Confrontation with Qaddafi (1996) and several articles and chapters related to Middle Eastern and military history. A 1978 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he is a veteran history teacher at the secondary and college levels.
