This book is the second edition of Peter Marwedel's book on Embedded System Design is based on the successful first edition, published by Kluwer Academic Publishers in 2003. For the second edition, topics have been restructured and extended. The book does now include information on cyber-physical systems where appropriate. The chapter on specification languages has been turned into a chapter on specification and modeling. This way, various flavors of model-based design are now covered. In general models of computation are emphasized. Languages are no longer presented as such, but as a means to...

A new chapter on evaluation and verification covers various objectives in embedded systems design. The need to consider multi-objective optimization replaces earlier approaches based on single objectives. A second new chapter focuses on the mapping of applications to execution platforms. The presented techniques range from simple scheduling techniques to multi-objective optimization for multi-core systems.
This book can be used as a textbook for students as well as a tutorial for faculty members and engineers. Using the book as a textbook is supported by integrated assignments and an appendix containing pre-requisites frequently found to be missing among computer science students. A rich set of updated references provides pointers to more advanced topics for faculty members and project-based education.
