Many people imagine that speakers of English who study the Japanese language find their way eased by the profusion of "English words" the Japanese have borrowed. Students of the language, however, often complain that borrowed words are more problematic than the older terms in the Japanese word pool.

Akira Miura is an associate professor of Japanese at the University of Wisconsin. A native of Tokyo and graduate of the University of Tokyo, he has been living in the United States for many years. He received his Ed.D. from Columbia University. He is the author of Amerika no Seikatsu to Kotoba and translated Sakae Tsuboi's Twenty-four Eyes and Takao Suzuki's Japanese and the Japanese. His long experiences in both Japan and the United States and his interest in languages make him eminently qualified to do research on English words that have been incorporated into Japanese.
