Informal economic activities have often been associated with poor working conditions and living standards amongst informal workers. This book considers whether a human development-inspired legislative framework might be able to promote overall development of a specific category of informal workers in India. Drawing upon Amartya Sen's capability approach to human development it proposes a framework of labour law based on the capability approach, which could address the concerns of informal workers. Supriya Routh is a France-ILO Research Chair and Scientific Advisor at the Nantes Institute for Advanced Study, Nantes, France. Formerly he was an Assistant Professor of Law at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, India. His research interests are labour law, informal economic activities, law and development, human rights, and the capability approach.
