On the occasion of the 75th birthday of Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker this unique anthology presents thought-provoking texts from 1970 to 2013, spanning several disciplines and combining science and practice. Among them are three Reports to the Club of Rome that Weizsäcker lead-authored, a new university curriculum system to promote interdisciplinary studies and a proposal for a five-fold increase in resource productivity, which would make it possible to shut down nuclear and fossil power plants, avoiding dangerous climate change impacts. Weizsäcker is Co-President of the Club of Rome and Co-Chair of UNEP’s Resource Panel. He has served as a Professor of Biology, President of Kassel Univ., Director of the UN Centre for Science and Technology and of the Institute for European Environment Policy, President of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, as a Member of the Bundestag, as Chair of its Environment Committee and as Dean of the Bren School for Environmental Science and Management, Univ. of California, Santa Barbara, USA.
Dipl.-Physiker Dr. Ernst-Ulrich von Weizsäcker, geb. 1939 in Zürich geboren, absolvierte nach dem Abitur 1958 in Göttingen ein Studium der Chemie und Physik in Hamburg.1968 wurde er an der Universität Freiburg im Breisgau bei Bernhard Hassenstein mit einer Arbeit zum Formensehen der Bienen zum Dr. rer. nat. promoviert. Von 1969-72 war Ernst-Ulrich von Weizsäcker wissenschaftlicher Referent bei der Forschungsstätte der Evangelischen Studiengemeinschaft in Heidelberg. 1972 nahm er den Ruf der Universität-Gesamthochschule Essen als ordentlicher Professor für Biologie an. Von 1975-80 war er Präsident der Universität Kassel. 1981 wechselte er dann als Direktor an das UNO-Zentrum für Wissenschaft und Technologie in New York, von 1984-91 war er dann Direktor des Instituts für Europäische Umweltpolitik Bonn, Paris, London. Von 1991-2000 war er Präsident des Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie. Von Januar 2006 bis Dezember 2008 war er Dekan der Bren School of Environmental Scienc
e and Management, University of California, Santa Barbara. Seitdem ist er nach eigenen Angaben 'freiberuflich' in Emmendingen tätig. 2011 wurde Ernst-Ulrich von Weizsäcker mit dem 'Theodor Heuss Preis' ausgezeichnet.
