This is a collection of 50 haiku, organised under loose and broad thematic descriptions. The headings are suggestive and meant to be a bit playful. Each haiku stands alone, but the thematic ordering I hope adds some additional colour. The themes are:
THE LINGERING OF PAST INTO PRESENT
THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION AND MISPERCEPTION
THE MIND MAKES IT ALL UP
THE BODY DOESN'T LIE
CITY 'VERMIN'
A BREAK IN THE ACTION
EVERYDAY OBJECTS
HAIKU FOR END TIMES
These English-language haiku are all written in the "standard" 5-7-5 form put forward by the Haiku Society of America in 1968: each haiku here has three lines of 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and 5 syllables respectively. As is often remarked this tends to be considerably longer than haiku in Japanese which generally have lines of fewer syllables. But it is a common standard and the one that I have found convenient to use.
