Within the shadows of Denver's streets hides a dark and sinister plot to take over the underworld of drugs. The only clue Sergeants Rick Murphy and Eddy Boswell have is a big, black car with an odd vanity plate that appears to wreak havoc on not only drug dealers, but cops as well. The black car has to be found and stopped. Death rides within it.
Now in charge of the Narcotics team, the guys hook up with their old friend, Senior Detective Dave Kramer. They work a case of a drug addict named Joey Mallory, whose connection is the main thrust of the whole set up. The streets are drying up. Tempers are on edge. Crime rises. Since this new dealer moved to town, execution-style hits take out suppliers. Joey's brother, Danny Mallory is both intelligent and dangerous. He is fast getting a reputation as a cold-hearted, evil man who has big plans for Denver, a drug kingdom with him as ruler. But his one weakness is a deep-seeded hatred of cops. Rick can't find a reason why.
On a dark night the black car surfaces. Death is on the move again. A wild police chase ensues. This time the target is Captain Cates daughter, a rookie following three generations of police officers. Rick vows to avenge her death.
Just three years ago, Rick and Eddy were freewheeling, single men. Now married to the love of his life, Jackie, and soon to be a father, Rick must balance work and home. Eddy too marries, Jackie's cousin, Lilly. Jackie comes from a proud tradition of police officers in her family and she accepts Rick's chosen life's work. But now with Denver cops in danger, she fears for her husband. Rick worries she wants him to quit. He believes it's his calling to stand between decent people and chaos, to protect the helpless.
During a sting operation that goes bad, a twist of fate puts Rick on Mallory's hit list. Would Rick live to see his child born? As always, Eddy and Dave take turns watching their friend's back. But that is easier said than done with someone as unpredictable as Murphy.
Police are the barrier between good and evil, that thin blue line between calm and chaos. It takes more courage to do the right thing then succumb to revenge. But this time was different. Would Rick be able to resist the temptation to be judge and jury of this cop killer? Unknown to everyone, another cop surfaces and plots his revenge on Mallory too. It soon becomes clear-someone will die. Will the Mile High city's walls of law and order come crashing down, all the way to hell? Not if Rick can stop it in time.
