Drawing on the diaries he kept as a soldier in the veteran 51st (Highland) Infantry Division 1943-45, Jack Swaab provides a searing insight into life at the Front in North Africa and Europe, recording his experiences in Tripoli, Sicily and the Normandy Landings. In September 1944 Swaab became a troop commander and a forward observation officer, recording the cold and squalor of observation post duty in a succession of frozen Dutch villages and accompanying the Black Watch as they attacked under 'artificial moonlight'. Wounded in the leg by shellfire, Swaab took part in 'Operation Varsity', the Rhine crossing, in March 1945, and received the Military Cross.
