Quand il n'est pas à l'hôtel, on peut le trouver sur la proue de son bateau à écrire des romances gay avec son chien de berger Shetland Mavis à ses côtés. Originaire du sud des États-Unis et adepte d'engagement et de fidélité, la plupart de ses personnages trouvent leur voie vers des relations longues et saines, quel que soit le temps que ça leur prend. Il pense qu'à la fin, le garçon devrait toujours finir avec le garçon. Scotty et son compagnon sont passionnés de navigation et vivent à bord de leur bateau. Ils passent leurs étés sur Martha's Vineyard et leurs hivers à Charleston, en Caroline du Sud, et à Savannah, en Géorgie.
