Have you ever wanted to leave home and travel to distant lands? Florian the Fly from Germany does just that. Unhappy with the rainy and cold weather in his hometown of Briedel on the Mosel River, he wants to go somewhere where the weather is warm and sunny. As luck would have it, the triplets are planning to visit their aunt in South Florida soon. With much planning and the help of a most unlikely ally, Florian finds himself on board the plane, headed to Fort Lauderdale. His arrival does not go according to plan, however. He finds himself separated from the triplets, in a wilderness far different from the vineyards and hills of his hometown. There are animal, bird, and reptile species he has never before encountered. Nothing resembles the place he left behind. He has to learn a new language (English), get accustomed to a new culture, and make new friends with so many who are different from him. In his exploration of South Florida, he begins to realize his real purpose in life, that of helping displaced, threatened, or endangered insects. He understands their longing for home and embarks on many new adventures as a result. Each adventure is written in English and in the language of the insect he helps. The book is written for children ages 5 - 10. It is intended to help the children retain their native language while learning a new language. It was always my mother's wish that I never lose my abilities to speak and read German, which is why books are important tools in this process. Let Florian be your guide in exploring new countries, reveal his tips on how to better learn a foreign language, and overcome the many obstacles he encounters trying to be a hero to others in need.
