In solid/liquid separation, cake washing is often an essential step whenever product quality in purity is the primary specification. In the process, pure wash liquor is applied onto the cake which contains its mother liquor with dissolved impurities in order to reduce the impurity content by either displacement or dilution.
This work focuses on the flow phenomena during cake washing driven by mass forces such as in a centrifugal field. Dealing with cake washing means that aspects of particle technology, mass transfer, flow phenomena and interface interactions have to be taken into account. A new point of view is presented to have a better understanding of the
washing mechanisms influenced by the process steps before and after washing.
The purpose of this work is to provide options for examination and optimization of cake washing in industrial processes.
