This relatively short book can be read in one semester and delivers the essential framework to understand the biological aspects of different mechanisms of regeneration and the therapeutic strategies that have emerged from this biology. The book begins with a broad overview of regenerative biology, followed by wound repair by fibrosis, stem cell and non-stem cell mechanisms of tissue regeneration, and vertebrate appendage regeneration. It continues with an overview of the strategies of regenerative medicine, followed by specific research and potential clinical applications of these strategies: the pharmaceutical induction of regeneration, stem cell transplantation, and biomimetic tissue and organ constructs. The final chapter looks to the future directions of regenerative medicine and includes a section on the bioethics of research approaches and clinical applications.
