Nianzu stays in the village of Simmerford as a lodger in a secluded chalet. He has come to escape the crime in his hometown. The new lodger quickly settles in and gets a job at the local history museum. There he meets his new eccentric colleagues including the perpetually miserable Colwyn, and the overzealous Grestova.

Meanwhile chalet owner Sue finds herself pulled into unintentional minimalism as she notices her possessions going missing on a regular basis. She begins to accuse those closest to her, with the line of suspects getting longer, as her friendship circle gets smaller. With each new twist, things seem to be falling apart.
