A palace with well-established foundations and lofty peaks, its roots were anchored on a high elevation of the earth, and its domes rose in the air as if they were asking for something in the sky. They were bathed in freshness, and the afternoon shone upon them, sending out a ray that was more beautiful than the afternoon, and more beautiful than pure freshness, and lush orchards spread around the palace. The streams flow through it, slow and stagnant, as if they fear that they will meet the river of Barada, and its turbulent roar will catch it and swirl it around. Like a frightened one, he invaded every house and penetrated every wall, and the flowers fluttered with wonderful colours, with a musky fragrance, and the breeze played with them, so they began to hide in their sleeves as if they were beautiful clouds, afraid and betraying the eyes and the curiosity of lovers, and they touched the poplar trees as if they were swayed by the chirping of birds above them, so they began to steal melodies. And the ringing rhythm keeps up. This is the hill of Damascus, and this is the palace of Al-Walid bin Yazid. It was called the "Hubaba" palace. It was built by Yazid bin Abd al-Malik, the Umayyad caliph, for his maidservant "Hubaba." He spent many of the state's treasures in it, and the great Roman architects built and decorated it, so it became an image of wonderful art. And as a manifestation of the King's Excellency, and the arrival of the Sultan... from this palace the events of the novel "Marah Al-Walid" begin.
