Works in this book provide a concise approach to the theoretical and numerical analysis of kinetic type equations that arise, for example, in modeling industrial, medical, and environmental problems. Readers will find some of the most recent theoretical results, newly developed numerical methods in the field, and some open problems. Possible application areas encompass fission/fusion energy, electromagnetics, nuclear science and engineering, medical service, radiation oncology, and plants growth conditions, to name a few. The JSPS/SAC seminars are jointly organized by JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science)—Stockholm Office and the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology & University of Gothenburg, Sweden. These seminars foster discussions on the mathematical theory, industrial and life science applications, and numerical analysis of non-linear hyperbolic partial differential equations modeling collision-less plasma and charged particles.

L. Beilina is as Full Professor at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg since 2018. She defended PhD thesis in 2003 at the same department. In 2003-2005 and 2007-2009 she worked as an Assistant Professor at University of Basel, Switzerland, and at NTNU, Trondheim, Norway. Since 2009 she has been employed at University of Gothenburg. Her main research interests are in the solution of inverse and ill-posed problems, optimization, adaptive finite element method and high-performance scientific computing. She is developer of software package WavES (waves24.com) for adaptive solution of forward and inverse wave propagation problems. She is in editorial board of 3 mathematical international journals. She is author of more than 80 papers published in peer-reviewed journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings, 2 books, and editor of 6 conference proceedings in the series "Springer Proceedings in Mathematics and Statistics". S. Takata has been a full professor at the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Kyoto University since 2013. He defended Dr. Eng. thesis in 1994 and has been employed at Kyoto University since then. He was a JSPS Fellow in 1992-1994 and received the Ryumon Prize from the Japan Society of Fluid Mechanics in 1995. In 2001-2002 he was a MEXT overseas researcher at the Ecole Normale Sup\'{e}rieure in Paris. He was a visiting professor at the Universit\'{e} Denis Diderot in winter 2004, a visiting scholar at the Academia Sinica (Taiwan) in winter 2008-2009, and an invited professor at the Ecole Polytechnique in winter 2011. His research interests are in the kinetic theory of gases and related fields. He is currently a member of the advisory committee of the International Symposium on Rarefied Gas Dynamics and a member of the Editorial Board of Networks and Heterogeneous Media. He is the author of more than 90 publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings.
