The present study is an attempt to update the taxonomic information on prawns of the genus Penaeus Fabricius, 1798 under the family of Penaeidae Rafinesque - Schmaltz, 1815, found in Indian water. This study focuses on the species composition, their distribution in Indian water and elsewhere and aspect of fishery. The Family of Penaeidae is represented by 30 genera (Chanda, 2016) of which 20 genera are found in Indian water. In the present study, Indian water represents 12 species under the genus of Penaeus Fabricius, 1798. The results presented here provide an insight into the macro-faunal diversity of the study area, and have established a baseline for future studies.

Khan Women's College, affiliated under Vidyasagar University, Midnapur, Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal, India. Author was a research scholar of Zoological Survey of India and Published more than 25 research papers in National & Internationally reputed Journals and also published four books. The author is engaged in research work on penaeid fishery, taxonomy and ecology from Indian water. He has completed one Minor and a Major Research Project funded by UGC, Government of India.
