This story is an allegory. It is one in a series of ten tales set in small town that is inhabited by animals, insects and a family of turtles. In the town called Harmony, lives a large family of Gerbils. Their lives are similar to most small town dwellers. In this story the title says it all, the Gerbils set out for their annual family vacation. This time it is a trip to the sea side. It is a huge undertaking since this family has more than 20 members and four generations in their home. The grandparents, who are retired from the Army, use their skills to keep their large brood of grandchildren safe and happy. The Gerbil parents manage their children with love and patience. The triplets, Holly, Polly, and Molly do push the family limits a little harder than the other children, even at the beach. While on vacation everyone gets an opportunity to try new things, like fishing from an old bridge or driving a go-cart. A visit to an old Life Guard Station is a thrilling adventure for one brave little Gerbil. In spite of the struggle to keep everyone organized Grandfathers Al and Gus find they enjoy being on vacation as much their children. Even a rainy day, which all most all vacations have, is great fun at an indoor miniature golf course. One day while the family is playing on the beach one of the little Gerbils wanders off to play in a large sand castle. The rest of the Gerbil clan goes into panic mode but all is well in the end. There is plenty of sand, fishing, go-carts and even a lost little Gerbil to make this vacation memorable. The large Gerbil family votes it their best vacation ever.
