In "Gift of the Unicorn", the threads of several timeless folk tales including most notably earlier versions of the Little Briar Rose/Sleeping Beauty type are woven together in a tapestry of prose set to capture the magic of the titular legendary creature which runs like a thematic skein of silver through each of the stories in this anthology, even when it is not explicitly mentioned, for its otherworldly influence is felt strongest in that twilight realm wherein mortal innocence comes up against immortal acumen, which itself brings a kind of innocence of its own to the mix, whether for good or ill. In "Wishing Well", a group of young people learn first-hand why you should be careful what you wish for, especially when in the presence of the ancient otherworldly devices belonging to the capricious Fae. "The Girl the Fairies Wanted" is a chilling tale of what can sometimes happen to the fairy-led, despite all attempts of their loved ones to intervene. In "Witch's Hill", a young mother reluctantly seeks the aid of a reputed witch to save the life of her infant son who is suffering from a mysterious ailment. But what she then must do in order to win him from the Fae will not only put her own life at risk, but both of their immortal souls. "The Otherfolk" takes a more lighthearted turn, dealing with the unfortunate but somewhat humorous circumstance of finding one's dream home only to discover that something else laid claim to that particular place long before you or any others of your kind were ever there. Lastly, this collection would not be complete without a final return of the mythical one-horned beast in "The Palace At Winter's End", a favorite of the author's from his very first fairy tale anthology, which rounds out the old wheel of the year as well, with yet another innocent young maiden trapped in an enchanted palace, this time surrounded by a haunted forest of evergreen trees in a snowbound world ruled by a mysterious wintry queen curiously fated to forever hunt the unicorn without any hope of catching it.
