A novel set in WWI era Boston and New York. America goes from being an emerging market in debt to English, Scottish and Dutch banks to becoming, by the end of the war four years later, a creditor to Europe and a world power.
One of the several themes of the story is the development of a world changing tchnology-it was called wireless audio transmissions. The idea that a New England farmhouse several miles away could perhaps, receive a transmission of a human voice, or even a concert, on a cold winter's night thrilled two of the female characters of the novel. who were dedicated to the advancement of the technology The experimenters called it "radio" and ,as they thought, it was destined to change the world.
The arrival of nineteen year old George Herman Ruth to Boston in August, 1914-the same month as the first cannons erupted in Europe signaling the beginning of the most devastating war in history- gangly and naive from a Baltimore workhouse was the beginning of his path to becoming America's first sports icon, and by the end of the war, as cynical a baseball game fixer as America had become on the world stage. He was simply known as "Babe" for the rest of his life.
Two fictitious familes, the Townsends and the Morrisons, take us through these intense four years as the war in Europe drifts ever closer to America's shores.
