The rapid transition of percussion practices from the fringes of musical activity to the forefront over the past nine decades changed the face of western art music. First emerging in North America and Europe in the late 1920s, a new generation of Australian artists added their voices to the narrative in the 1960s. The role of Australian activity in the development of this ever-evolving art form is examined by Louise Devenish, uncovering the political, social and cultural influences on this discipline through an historical survey of music in Australia, viewed through the lens of developments in percussion over a 50 year period from 1960-2010.
