This is a novel about a very haunted sexual and emotional obsession. Amanda, a beautiful young girl from a witch background, discovers a ghost in her great-aunt's mansion. William is the very handsome ghost of a Confederate soldier who was killed young at the Battle of Gettysburg along with many thousands of other young men.
Being a part of the Confederate American William, a man of his times, believes in slavery and the inferiority of certain races. This girl Amanda, being of modern times, has very few if any racial prejudices herself. However, this sort of difference does not become apparent until much later.
In face Amanda was basically raised and very much mothered and loved by Delia, a black maid and cook of the Manning family. Her mother, the beautiful blonde Aurelia, was much more concerned with her own affairs, both literally and figuratively and not at all loving or concerned for her daughter and only child, Amanda.
William is a very handsome and even virile ghost and Amanda finds herself totally infatuated and even obsessed with him. He can make love really divinely, especially for a ghost. Amanda had a handsome boyfriend in high school, a Craig Weston, but she basically abandons Craig for William's heady lovemaking.
But Amanda did have a brief affair with Craig and when she becomes pregnant she assumes the biological father is, of course, Craig. William says, of course, he will help her raise the baby. Anyway, Amanda is seeing more and more of Williams's really bad and in fact vile beliefs and qualities. Finally, heavily pregnant Craig comes to her door to ostensibly rescue her and William tries to kill him.
However, Amanda, claiming her own magical and witch=talents she hadn't quite realized that she had, encases William i and bad fellow dead Confederate ghosts in materialized white light and actually sends William and his compatriots straight to hell. Not a moment too soon, though. Amanda's water breaks and Craig drives her very quick to the hospital. She has her baby successfully and it is a very beautiful dark-haired and eyed baby boy who looks very like William. Amanda adores the baby on sight no matter who the father is.
Craig, realizing the unbelievable truth says he will accept and love the baby as his own. Amanda really now adores Craig for that. They are going to marry. However, in the sequel, things don't work out happily ever after for them at all, as one could assume.
