Population ageing is recognized as one of the global demographic megatrends with continued and lasting impacts on sustainable development and the way we live and work in our societies. Accounting for around 30 per cent of the world's population aged 65 years and older, the UNECE region constitutes an urgent need to mainstream ageing, whereby a strategic, comprehensive effort is made to integrate ageing issues into all policy fields and levels. Drawing on the methodology of UNECE Road Maps for Mainstreaming Ageing and experiences gleaned from nearly 20 years of implementing the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) in the region, this publication considers ageing from both a societal and individual life-course perspective. Taking this 'twin-track approach', it guides policymakers in advancing or improving their mainstreaming efforts and offers a Strategic Framework.
