The novel begins with a discussion between two adult American men, after the funeral of Helen, the wife of one of them, Ben. He tells his friend, Tom, of seeing a vision of her the previous night in which she assured him she was all right and to send her love to the kids. While this vision is angelic, Ben also experiences a dream vision from the demonic side, a classic fata morgana in which he recognizes a killer. Though he believes these visions confirm the existence of the immortality of the individual soul, they also raise the question of a final judgment and of the nature and genesis of evil. As he becomes more obsessed and troubled by these visions, Tom tries to help him, to reassure him that paranormal psychic experience, however true it may be, does not meet the standards of legally admissible evidence. L.H. May graduated with a B.A. cum laude in English from Yale College, and received a Juris Doctor degree from Indiana University School of Law. He practiced law for many years and has written numerous novels, many set in Peru, including 'The Gate Of Two Snakes'.
