This is the story of the brutality of cancer in a time when the medical profession in South Africa was itself learning to cope with bigoted attitudes and inadequate surgical skills. The story details dealing with progressive setbacks and evidence of the destruction of faith and dignity. It is the story of my wife's and my battle with the disease. It tells the harsh truth of a family in crisis and assisted dying. It is also the story of my walk after her death through South Africa at a time when the country was learning to deal with a new social reality. The inherent goodness of all sectors of the population of South Africa is clearly shown as is the fine work done by Hospice and the South African Cancer Association. Nothing is hidden and the story joins the events of both journeys with honesty and reflects the human impact of terminal illness on a family.
