In this new collection of memories, tributes, photos and paintings, former members of the socialist-Zionist youth movement, Hashomer Hatzair, reflect on how participation in this organization influenced the trajectory of their lives and their values as adults. Whether new immigrants to North America, second or third generation, these youngsters found a home in Hashomer and many have kept in touch since they were teens in the 1960s despite their worldly wanderings. The fact that there are still strong ties between them is a testament to the value of young people working together on meaningful pursuits. Many of the contributors live in Israel or on kibbutz and many others spent some time on kibbutz and/or in Israel.
Their writing is intimate and revealing and edifying to those who may not know much about Jewish life in North America and its connection to Israel.
If you once belonged to a group of like-minded people, this volume could serve as a model to use in compiling your reflections that can enrich us all.
