This story will make you cry with sorrow and also with laughter, sometimes both at once! It takes you on a journey back in time to the Dublin of my youth. This is an account of growing up during the late 50s and 60s with parents who spent most of their time at loggerheads with each other, especially as my father was an alcoholic. It talks about my younger days, being educated by the nuns at a convent which has now become synonymous with cruelty against the orphans who boarded there. I was knocked down by an ambulance at the age of seven and was blown up at the age of ten, in an explosion which killed my sister; then there was the subsequent court case in search of compensation or 'compo' as it was known in our household. Learn how the outcome of this event affected our family and led to the general mischief that I got up to as a streetwise gurrier (Dublin slang for tearaway) during my teens. The story talks about my school days at CUS in Leeson Street, Dublin. It also describes my escapades while working in St James Hospital as a porter during the summer holidays and the mischief I got up to during those 'madding days of summer' spent on my uncle's farm in East Cork, where I was given an insight into normal family life. To cap it all, you'll also hear a romantic love story which began some forty three years ago.
