The Umbanda religion summons the spirits of old slaves and Brazilian Indians to speak through the mouths of mediums in trance. Lindsay Hale is a social anthropologist who has carried out research on Umbanda and other Afro-Brazilian religions since 1986. He earned his PhD in 1994 at the University of Texas, Austin, and has taught anthropology and Latin American study courses there since 1995.
