Horace Herbert "Bert" Smith was an 1890s police reporter in Butte, Montana, the setting for a manuscript published posthumously that he titled Hell With the Lid Off. He went on to a writing career and publishing achievements in New York. Smith, born in Ontario, Canada in 1868, died in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 1936.
