The moment they arrive, the temptation to enjoy a rare day off proves too strong. In a flash, the group strips down to their swimwear, dashing into the cool embrace of the ocean. Henry is left sputtering, torn between their mission and his personal inner strugglehis secret, unspoken love for his best friend, Gamaken. Watching Gamaken laugh and splash around in nothing but swim trunks makes Henry's heart ache, but he keeps his feelings hidden. Meanwhile, Gamaken is oblivious, too busy admiring their female companions in their skimpy bikinisand the mysterious fishwomen, half-human, half-mermaid creatures basking in the sun.

But the carefree day is interrupted by a sudden warning. A bell tolls, panic surges through the crowd, and people flee the beach. A curious Gamaken questions a nearby kappa yokai, discovering the horrifying truth: when night falls, the funa-yurei, ghostly sea phantoms, rise from the depths to unleash chaos.

With dread hanging in the salty air, the Cursebreakers make a dash for their contact, Mayor Marius Tidecaller. But fate has other plans. The funa-yurei aren't waiting for twilightthey attack early, crawling from the surf, their waterlogged bodies a terrifying sight. The crew is forced into battle. Henry's magic crackles to life, but he can't help but notice Gamaken shrinking back, his frog-turned-human heart trembling with fearbecause Gamaken, despite all his bravado, is terrified of ghosts.

Now, they face more than a fightthey're entangled in a mystery. Why are these sea spirits suddenly able to attack on land? And, most importantly, who is pulling the strings? The Cursebreakers must uncover the truth... or risk becoming the next victims of the Whispering Wave.

Author KuroKoneko Kamen (Black Kitten Mask) has always had an interest in Japanese culture from folktales about yokai (ancient demons) to anime and manga. As a result of being an otaku a lot of her stories are set in Japan or have a Japanese theme. Even when in the midst of a pirate novel expect a samurai warrior to be thrown into the mix. Her latest passion is paranormal romance and she's written stories where ghosts, demons, and angels find love. Keeping her company as she writes are her several dogs and cats, some of which are rescues (now including a pet turtle someone wanted to make a soup out of).
