Howard Phillips (H.P.) Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an influential author best known for his science fiction, horror and fantasy stories, and among those stories his best known ones are those that combine elements of all three. Through that mixture, Lovecraft became the most celebrated author of a genre known as "weird fiction", especially with his works on the the monster Cthulhu, which has continued to be the subject of other writers' works. Today, an entire mythos centers around Cthulhu, bringing together all of the different stories from all of the different writers.

He is best recognized for his contributions to the genre of weird fiction and horror, with his works often categorized as cosmic horror of the unknown and the despair of insignificance. Lovecraft's writing, characterized by a dense and antiquated style, drew upon his fascination with the supernatural and his themes frequently explored the limits of human understanding and the horrors lurking beyond the confines of reality. Despite his profound impact on horror literature, Lovecraft's works were predominantly published in pulp magazines during his life, leading him to live in relative poverty and obscurity.
