JOHN ELIOT ALLEN mapped and hiked Oregon's geology from the Wallowas to the coast. In addition to his distinguished career in teaching and research at Portland State University, he authored two acclaimed books about the Columbia River Gorge as well as Time Travel columns for the Oregonian. A longtime Portland resident, John passed away in 1996.
