He is particularly remembered for his books on notable American figures, such as The True Story of Christopher Columbus (1892) and The True Story of George Washington (1895). These works were part of his broader effort to instill a sense of patriotism and national pride in the youth of his time. In addition to his literary career, Brooks worked as an editor and critic, contributing to various publications. He was married to Hannah-Melissa Debaun.
