As a 50-plus-year resident of West Salem and other neighborhoods in Winston-Salem, author Michael L. Bricker is the lay historian of the West Salem neighborhood. He is the founder of the West Salem Historical Society and presided over the nomination of West Salem for the National Register of Historic Places; in 2005, West Salem was deemed a neighborhood worth preserving for its significance in American history.
