The first edition of this book was published in the year 1911 AD, and its author, Mustafa Sadiq Al-Rafi'i, was still a young man of thirty years old. Although this book marks the beginning of his era of scientific research writing, it is a solid historical and critical work that later became, with its three parts, an important reference. In the history of Arabic literature, this indicates the writer's combined wisdom and linguistic eloquence, which is rarely attained by anyone at his age, to the point that he deserved the title "The Miracle of Arabic Literature." The first part of the book reviews the origin of languages, their emergence and branching, from the time they were sounds until they became written down, and discusses the reasons for the difference in the Arab languages, which I attribute to the multiplicity of tribes, and the fact that they were illiterate and did not write, so the language continued to change according to the change of tongues. It also discusses the reasons for the emergence of the colloquial language and melody. Which is its origin and substance, and it also deals with the historical origin of the novel, its connection with literature, its status after Islam, and the narrators and their types, who were the ones who achieved the feats of science and were the sheikhs of the generations.
