This book is considered one of the first new historical writings. It was written at the end of the nineteenth century to chronicle the Ottoman Empire and present it to the Arabic language reader. In general, it tends towards historical narration away from criticism and analysis, except in rare cases. Although the goal of its author, Muhammad Farid Bey, was to strengthen the Ottoman Empire in the face of the English occupation of Egypt, it remains an excellent historical book. The author carefully checked his information and included the texts of treaties and agreements that he translated from the Turkish language. Muhammad Farid monitored the nature of the transformation of power and its exercise in the Ottoman Empire, starting with determining the authority of the Grand Vizier, minting gold and silver coins, and transforming the armies into regular, disciplined ones, after they had been summoned during wartime from the tribes. The author also referred to the beginning of calling the Sultans of the Othman family Muslim caliphs, which was initiated by Sultan Abdul Aziz in the nineteenth century, as an attempt to overcome the weakness of the Ottoman Empire and the shaky image of it, with the aim of consolidating public opinion and exploiting the spread of Muslims around the world. The book also documents the Ottoman Empire granting European countries privileges that were nothing more than royal gifts and granting them huge financial returns at the expense of the state and its people for nothing in return except friendship and love!
