Sixty-six million years ago, an asteroid traveling 7.5 at 45,000 mph 7.5 miles wide hit the Earth.

Had that meteor missed hitting the Earth humans would not have evolved.

Despite calling ourselves a "civilized" species, defined as having a well-developed system of government, culture, and fairness, our history tells a different story. A "civilized society" is supposed to treat its people fairly, with justice at its core. We also describe ourselves as "humane," which implies compassion and care for humans and animals. Yet, when we look at the scope of human behavior over the past 12,000 years, it becomes difficult to use either "humane" or "civilized" to describe the human species.

About the Author: Nathan N. Shasho is an accomplished musician who attended the Mannes College of Music. After taking over his father's retail business and attending Brooklyn College at night, he earned undergraduate degrees in sociology and psychology with a minor in anthropology. He also holds a master's degree in psychology. Nathan currently lives in Brooklyn, New York, and has two sons.
