Alec Reed was born in 1934. He is the founder of the Reed Employment group and is involved in large-scale charity work worldwide, for which he has been awarded the CBE.

Judi Bevan is a freelance journalist and writer. Her previous books include The Rise and Fall of Marks and Spencer (Profile, 2002) and Trolley Wars (Profile, 2005).
