It's the summer of 1952, and 17-year old Katherine Baker makes a cross country move with her parents to South Carolina. It is there that she discovers what prejudice means. After moving from the Northwest state of Washington to a small town in South Carolina, Katherine reunites with her dad's family and begins making new friends. One day she breaks up a fight, as some youngsters are picking on a little boy--a black little boy. She intervenes and makes a new friend in the little boy, his brother, and the rest of his family. Their difference in color doesn't matter to any of them, until it becomes a matter to an unknown someone else making threats to all of them. That's when tragedy strikes, and Katherine is left disillusioned with her world and her God. It is only then that she learns the true meaning of grace and redemption.
