The year is 1991. The Cold War has raged on for five decades. The USSR, however, has shown signs of crumbling. It is clear that reform must take place, or it will cease to exist. Meanwhile, life goes on. Darius Wipf, a professional hockey player from Canada, has gone to Moscow to have his knee surgically repaired by the world's foremost orthopedic surgeon. As part of his recuperation, he is allowed to practice with the Soviet national hockey team, which is preparing for the World Cup in Lvov. Soviet hardliners execute a coup against Gorbachev and Darius finds himself enmeshed in the middle of it.
