Laurence Hope, born Adela Florence Cory in 1865, was an English poet deeply inspired by the landscapes, culture, and experiences of life in British India. Married to Colonel Malcolm Hassels Nicolson, Hope gained considerable insight into Anglo-Indian society which she eloquently expressed in her poetry. Under the pseudonym 'Laurence Hope,' her work drew from the passion and mystique of the Indian subcontinent, inextricably linking love and longing with the vivid tapestry of Eastern life. Her most renowned collection, 'India's Love Lyrics' (1901), exhibited these themes with sensual and at times melancholic verses that captivated readers with their exoticism and heartfelt emotion. Hope's verse often reflects the tragic nuances of love, blending her personal despair from an unhappy marriage and the loss of her children.
