This volume, as indicated by the title, is designed to show the way to the beginner, to satisfy and more especially to excite his initial curiosity. It affords an adequate idea of the march of facts and of ideas. The reader is led, somewhat rapidly, from the remote origins to the most recent efforts of the human mind. Produktbeschreibung
It should be a convenient repertory to which the mind may revert in order to see broadly the general opinion of an epoch-and what connected it with those that followed or preceded it. It aims above all at being a frame in which can conveniently be inscribed, in the course of further studies, new conceptions more detailed and more thoroughly examined. It will have fulfilled its design should it incite to research and meditation, and if it prepares for them correctly.

Autorenporträt
Auguste Émile Faguet (17 December 1847 - 7 June 1916) was a French literary critic and author. Faguet was born in La Roche-sur-Yon, Vendée, and received his education at Paris' École Normale Supérieure. Their writing assists people in connecting with and understanding one another. The author's works are full of originality and passion, transporting readers to other realms and emotions. After teaching in La Rochelle and Bordeaux, he returned to Paris to work as an assistant professor of poetry at the university level. Faguet was appointed professor in 1897. He was elected to the Académie française in 1900 and was awarded the Légion d'honneur the following year. Faguet was the Soleil's dramatic critic; from 1892 to 1896, he was the Revue Bleue's literary critic; and in 1896, he replaced Jules Lemaître on the Journal des débats. Faguet died in Paris at the age of 68.
