The question of how best to achieve sustained organisational performance is of national and international significance. Organisations that achieve high rates of innovation increase the likelihood of sustaining competitive advantage, and, therefore to succeed in an increasingly globally competitive marketplace. Where labour markets are more highly regulated and where wages costs are relatively high, for example, in many EU countries compared to countries such India and China, an absence of high rates of innovation is likely to cast a death knell for many organisations and a downward spiral for national competitiveness. While there is a lot of research focused on the technical aspects of innovation, rather less attention has been devoted to understanding the how human capital can be effectively managed and developed in order to enhance innovation rates in organizations. This ebook aims to contribute to this relatively nascent debate. This debate has potentially profound implications for academics, practitioners and indeed the future competitive success of organisations and national economies.
