The book is to intorduce children to four of Scottish poet Robert Burns's most famous poems. They include, To a Mouse, To a Louse, and two others. Each poem is laid out in three steps to assist the children. Firstly there is a story that was inspired by the poem, then at the back of the book is an interpretation of the poem and finally Robert Burns poem. The four stories are,

Poem, To a Mouse -- The Farmer and the Field Mouse -- This mouse's troubles don't end after the farmer knocks over the straw nest.
Poem, Death and dying words of poor Mailie --The day my pet died -- Criag is upset when his friend Hugh tells him his pet sheep died.
Poem, The Favourite Old Horse -- Wendy finds out why her father thake such good care of their old horse
