Annie Besant (1847 - 1933) was a British socialist, theosophist, women's rights activist, writer, orator, educationist, and philanthropist. She was regarded as a champion of human freedom. During her career, she created over three hundred books and pamphlets, helped to establish the Banaras Hindu University, and took an active part in the life of the Theosophical Society of Helen Blavatsky.
