My Muslim father, Abdul Razaq, abandoned my mother while I was still in the womb, so I never set my eyes on him until I reached the age of nine. He had run away with another woman and left me at the mercy of my maternal grandmother, who was also dumped by her Muslim husband after he married younger wives. So while my paternal relatives tried to enroll me in Koranic school and wanted me to practice Islam, my grandmother insisted that I should follow her to church and be a good Christian. She told me that Islam is a harsh and cruel religion that shows no respect for women. This perspective is understandable, considering the way her Muslim husband and my mother's treated each of them. She also told me that Islam has no regard for the lives of people who are non-Muslim. The Koran regards them as pagans whom Muslims can kill at will, as Allah permits it.
