The author is currently a superintendent of a school district in . He has worked with handicapped students, youth at risk, and gangs. His work with youth gangs has brought him international accolades. His personal experiences with adversities while going to school in the steered him toward the teaching profession. He constantly reminds teachers and administrators about being caring and compassionate. It is with this in mind that he pursues his goal of assuring that children receive quality education in a nurturing environment. To maintain his link to his culture, he visits his homeland every year, spending time in a village on a remote island
