In the book we meet a nurse, a soil scientist, a curtain salesman, an HIV activist, a cab driver, an orphanage manager, Roma and Yulia, and many, many others. I believe that it is up to the Russian journalist to write about these people as the first step toward repentance and reparations that Russia owes Ukraine" (Valery Panyushkin). This is a story about refugees and their ordeal, about the volunteers who rushed to their aid from all over the world, as well as about ourselves and our attitude toward refugees. None of the characters in the book were prepared for the fact that they had to flee. They are successful, wealthy, professional people. No one even thought about it, and then it turned out that anyone can become a refugee - even citizens of the country whose army the refugees are fleeing from.
